We begin with a short dry land lesson where we learn how to handle the surfboard in the water, safety, how to catch waves and then how to pop up and ride the surfboard. The Four Count Surf Method Oceanside foam waves are easy to catch. At first in the water, I push students into waves until they are popping up and riding. Then I teach them to catch their own waves. This is where the fun begins. The goal is to ride the board to the beach. I teach a beginner pop up that doesn’t require the upper body and core strength surfers develop to do their advanced pop ups. I have found students are much more successful with an easier method first. Students learn to do a count and move their body in alignment with the count so that they are smooth and eliminate thinking. In my ten years of practice I have found this is the quickest process for getting up and riding. The Dryland Portion and in the Water The dry land portion of the Oceanside Surf lesson instructs students how to perform the techniques for popping up and riding waves. Many students get it on the first ride in the water. Then after a while a certain malaise starts to set in and students think they no longer have to perform techniques as they learned them. This causes student surfers to start missing waves and falling. They have to be reminded that the first techniques learned are the only techniques that work and when they start creating their own, they get into trouble. As an instructor I watch for this regression as students get comfortable in the water, get tired, and then get lazy. Ideally, when practicing surfing on one’s own, the correct techniques should be incorporated and tiredness usually from paddling seduces students to get sloppy. This is the time to get out of the water. Kids do not do professional pop ups but generally climb up on the board. I tell them that is fine as long as they keep their weight in the middle of the board and arrive at the correct posture. Get another tutorial from over 200 blogs.
